Folders and Grading
Daily folders will go home everyday and should be brought back to school on a daily basis. In this folder will be your child's conduct calendar that should stay in the folder, other important information, and their spelling words for the week.
Please let your child share his or her work with you and review and discuss any written comments. Papers marked with a number indicate it was an important assessment.
1= Unable to master the objective or task even with teacher support (significantly below grade level).
2= Needs teacher support in order to master the objective or task (slightly below grade level).
3= Mastered objective or task independently (on grade level).
4= Shows evidence of application beyond grade level expectations (above grade level).

Homework
If you look under the homework tab you will find more detailed information. It is my belief that kids at this age shouldn't be overwhelmed with homework. They should be spending quality time with their family and playing. That is why students are only expected to read a book every day to a family member and practice spelling words in a manner they choose.
Behavior Expectations
As your child enters the first grade he/she will be held to very high expectations. My assistant and I will provide a caring and nurturing environment while encouraging your child to be a risk taker and critical thinker. Good behavior is an important part of such high expectations. All students at Willow Springs are expected to observe the "3 B's" which stands for: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. During the first few weeks of school we will be talking a lot about what each of the "B's" means specifically and what it would look like throughout the school building.
I like to keep it simple as I have tried many behavior management systems. Each student is assigned a set of cards in a pocket chart (green, yellow, and red). Every student starts at green (fantastic day) each day and then proceeds to yellow, or red should they make a poor choice.
*Green: Great day!
*Yellow: A few warnings about minor things
*Red: A lot of warnings about minor things or had a major incident
Treasure box prizes and other earned special privileges will be used to encourage good behavior.
Each night in your child’s daily folder there is a calendar to inform you of your child’s daily behavior. At the end of each day your child will color in his or her calendar according to which card they are on. Comments indicating why your child “flipped” his/her card may be written by me or your child under the calendar as well. Please review your child’s behavior with him/her daily and initial the box each night. Please establish rewards and consequences at home for your child to encourage good behavior at school which will allow him/her to reach their maximum learning potential.
