It is my belief that kids at this age shouldn't be overwhelmed with homework. They should be spending quality time with their family and playing. That is why students are only expected to read a book every day to a family member and study spelling words in a manner they choose.
* Read a book to a family member every day.
Students can read a book they have at home, library books, or read the decodable stories that will be sent home at the beginning of each quarter. There are more decodable books called "Phonics Readers" on the Letterland app (on Wake portal) they can also read.
Parents, when your child reads to you encourage them to use strategies to figure out words that they come to that they do not know. Primarily we want students to really use phonics knowledge and not simply figure out words by guessing. These are some great coaching phrases you can use when your child gets stuck:-
- "Sound it out or Tap it Out."
- "Look for chunks."
- "What sounds right or makes sense?"
- "Flip the sound and sound it out a different way." (This works when there are letters that make more than one sound.)
* Practice the weekly spelling words however you choose.
Every week a new spelling word list will be sent home in your child's daily folder. The spelling words that we are learning how to read and spell come from the Letterland phonics program.
Ideas for practicing:
- Have an adult randomly point to words on your list and read them as fast as you can. Students should be able to read and spell the weekly words.
- Practice weekly spelling words using the Raz Kids website by clicking on the "Vocabulary" planet. Students can play fun games with their spelling words on this site. www.raz-kids.com
- Write your spelling words in rainbow colors.
- Paint your spelling words on the driveway with just a paintbrush and water.
- Write spelling words with chalk.
- Have a parent call out words for you to spell as a practice spelling test.
- Call out words for your parents to spell and then you check their paper and fix mistakes you see.
- Write each word 3 to 5 times.
- Build your spelling words with play-doh.
- Use magnet letters to spell your words.
